The Role of Your Interior Designer

Like good therapists, good design consultants should not tell you what to do; nor should they tell you what they would do. Through effective communication, extensive training, and a vast knowledge base, designers should assist you by understanding your needs and wants and helping you to identify and achieve your project goals. As is the case with effective therapists, the best interior designers know and respect that the time you spend together is about you!

Skilled designers should serve as proficient and informative guides through your construction or renovation project. The design process should include gathering information related to budget, familial needs (e.g. caring for an aging relative), desired deadlines, etc. You can assist your designer by providing him/her with photographs of interiors, art, and fashion that appeal to you. Your design consultant should be able to synthesize this information to help you manifest a unique interior, reflective of who you are and what you need.
A successful design will result from excellent communication between you and your designer. It is important that you feel you designer listens to you and responds with respect, understanding, and a desire to achieve an outstanding outcome, customized to your home or business needs. The nature or tone of the relationship possible between you and your designer can often be determined during an initial phone or on-site consultation.
